In Buddhism, reality is examined through the three spheres of being in order to discover their inseparability as the fourth sphere. The sphere of emptiness is pregnant with the possibility of form arising. The sphere of energy is the tension between being and not-being, emptiness and form. Intangible form manifests from emptiness – thought, emotion, attentiveness, intention, sensory perception. These are empty, yet experienced. The sphere of form is the dimension of tangible appearance – physicality, activity, sensory experience. The three spheres—or dimensions—of being are inseparable – in the same way that the height, width, and depth of a three-dimensional object are inseparable. To experience the inseparability of the dimensions of being is to awaken.
