The Hell Of Being A Practitioner - Illusory Advice

Relationship with the teacher will turn the heat up. Because the teacher sees us as we really are and recognises the enlightened potential of our neurotic tendencies, they act as a mirror for the student. The teacher allows the student to catch glimpses of their realised qualities, but also puts a magnifying glass on the neurotic tendencies.

This can be a hellish experience as we struggle to present those aspects of ourselves we believe to be worthy, and try to hide what we believe is less presentable. The teacher will play with this till we begin to realise that what we see as our neurotic side is actually also our realised nature.

When we practise silent sitting we get acquainted with ourselves. - Illusory Advice

“When we practise silent sitting—shi-nè—we get acquainted with ourselves. We begin to face our own minds and progressively discover our psychological make-up. Once the mental chatter that distracts us from the directness of practice starts to subside, we are left with the uncomfortable discovery of our neurotic patterning.”

Awakening intent - Battlecry of Freedom

“Practitioners may not recognise it, but they do have power. Dedication to practice creates a presence, a dignity, and a demeanour that is communicated to others. It is important to be straightforward and remember naturalness, and ordinariness. Practitioners must not become disconnected from the warm heart of awakening intent.”

Between tightness and looseness - Battlecry of Freedom

“The path to awakening is a marathon not because awakening is a gradual process of itself, but because increasing the frequency of awakened experience is gradual. Awakening is achieved by tensioning the rein, but still allowing freedom of movement. If the tension is too tight or too loose the mind is not able to recognise pressure on the rein as an instruction. Learning to judge the balance between tightness and looseness takes time. It has to be discovered in the empty dimension of riding the mind. It is an intimate and integrated experience.”

There will be progress - Battlecry of Freedom

“Mind Training is a way of living, not just a means to an end. Travelling the path of practice is the fruit—or will become the fruit—without the need to worry about whether anything is being achieved quickly enough. As long as the mind is being trained, there will be progress. There will be awakening.”
